With high energy, full of enthusiasm and excitement these learners are ready to squeeze there creative juices and open a new chapter in their lives. They have taken up a career in the field of Photography and we wish them the very best. The orientation program for the newly admitted Learners of diploma in photography course was organised on 22nd Jan 2020. The Students were greeted by the seniors and the staffs of Ambitions 4 Photography Academy and introduced to the campus, facilities, culture and history of the place.

The orientation was held at our Pallikaranai Campus. The dignitaries present on the occasion were KL Raja Ponsing, Founder Director, Preethaa Priyadarshini, Senior Faculty – Visual Communication and Design, Siddharth K, Faculty. The session started with introduction to Ambitions4 Photography Academy journey by Siddharth K followed by introduction of KL Raja Ponsing.

KL Raja Ponsing then addressed the new learners and had an interactive session on “How to be a Successful photographer?”. They were informed of the necessary steps they had to take to become successful in their career through a disciplined learning process. There was a detailed discussion about the courses, the commitment and requirements from the learner’s side for the successful completion of the course. The students were also briefed on the do’s and dont’s inside the academy premises.

Following that, the freshers introduced themselves to the faculty and senior learners. An icebreaking session with their seniors was organised, who came up to the stage to talk about their experiences at the academy and offered to help the freshers getting inducted into the academy procedures, photography assignments, photo-walks, accommodation and even good eat outs nearby.

The freshers were then handed over a signed copy of the book “Starting with your DSLR Camera” written and published by KL Raja Ponsing and then taken around the campus to familiarise the facilities available.

The session ended with a Group Photo of the faculty and students and a note of thanks from KL Raja Ponsing.

An article about our alumni Sathish Kumar

This is an article about our alumni Sathish Kumar whose work got featured in BURN magazine and subsequently published in “The Hindu -Tamil” by Journalist M.Kannan.

Sathish Kumar, for his series of photos, has been selected as one of the finalists for the Emerging Photographer Fund 2019 which was initiated by David Alan Harvey in 2008, funded privately by Michael Loyd Young through the Magnum Cultural Foundation.

“These are images from as early as my teens to this day. The essence of every new experience while growing up was recorded with my camera – roaming around the neighborhood, meeting old friends, most times making new ones. As the life in a large city got suffocating, I began to seek relief by going back to my home town or by going on treks, to take a deep breath, to be back to the demands of the city. Town Boy is about boyhood, my movement from a small town to a cosmopolitan city, to somehow fit into this contemporary world.”

பேசும் படம்: கணத்தின் உணர்வுகள்!

எப்போதும் யாராவது ஒருவர் செல்போன் கேமராவால் படம் எடுத்துக்கொண்டுதான் இருக்கிறார்கள். காஞ்சிபுரத்தைச் சேர்ந்த சதீஷ்குமார் 2001-ல் ஃபிலிம் கேமராவால் (Point and shot Camera) மனதுக்குத் தோன்றியதைப் படம் எடுத்துக்கொண்டிருந்தார். அவருடைய அப்பாவுக்கு திடீரென்று உடல்நிலை சரியில்லாமல் போன பொழுதுகளையும் பதிவுசெய்திருக்கிறார்.

அந்தக் கறுப்பு-வெள்ளை படங்களைத் தேர்வுசெய்து, ‘வீடு மற்றும் டவுன் பையன்’ என்ற ஒளிப்படத் தொகுப்புகளாக இணையத்தில் பதிவேற்றினார். அதில் ஒன்று அப்பாவினுடைய நினைவு பற்றியது. இன்னொன்று தான் வாழ்ந்த நகரின் அனுபவம் சார்ந்தது.

இந்த இரு ஒளிப்படத் தொகுப்புகள் ரசனையாகவோ, அழகியல் ரீதியிலோ இல்லாமல் சாதாரண காட்சிகள் போலத்தான் இருந்தன. இருந்தபோதும் அந்தத் தருணம் வெளிப்படுத்தும் உணர்வுகளுக்கு மட்டுமே முக்கியத்துவம் கொடுத்து படங்களை எடுத்திருந்தார். இந்த ஒளிப்படத் தொகுப்புதான் அவருக்கு சர்வதேச அங்கீகாரத்தை வழங்கியது.

பர்ன் (BURN) என்ற இதழ் ஆண்டுக்கு ஒருமுறை சர்வதேச அளவில் வழங்கும் நிதிநல்கையைப் பெற 15 பேரில் ஒருவராக இவரைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்துள்ளது. அத்துடன் லென்ஸ் கல்சர், பெட்டர் போட்டோகிராபி போன்ற இதழ்களில் இவருடைய நேர்காணல்கள் வெளியாகியுள்ளன.

கோடை விடுமுறையில் பெங்களூருவுக்கு மாமா வீட்டுக்குப் போனபோது மாமா வாங்கிக் கொடுத்த பிலிம் கேமராவில் படம் எடுத்துப் பழகினார். இது இப்படியே ‘காட்சித்தொடர்பியல்’ பட்டப் படிப்பு, ஒளிப்படக் கலை என அழைத்துச் சென்றது.

மாநகரத்துக்குச் சென்ற பிறகு தன்னுடைய ஊர், விளையாடிய இடங்களை நினைவுகளாக தன் அருகிலேயே வைத்துக்கொள்ள அந்தக் கணத்துக்கான உணர்வுகளைப் பதிவுசெய்யத் தொடங்கினார். ஒளிப்பட விதிகளில் கவனம் செலுத்தாமல் குழந்தையின் மனதைப்போல் ஒளிப்படங்களாகத் தொகுத்துள்ளார். இப்படி எடுக்கப்பட்ட படங்கள் தான் சர்வதேச அளவில் கவனம் பெற்றன.

“இந்தப் பாணியிலான படங்களைத் தனிப்படமாகப் பார்க்காமல் முழு தொகுப்பாகப் பார்க்கும்போதுதான் ஒருவித நெருக்கத்தை உணரலாம்” என்கிறார் சதீஷ்குமார்.

Professional photography has become very challenging especially as a business. Photographers know that the customers are the kings and without them, they cannot be in the business. There are challenging negotiations happening especially when comes to photographers’ charges. Some of the customers are giving a tough task when it comes to pricing. This video is published in the interest of professional photographers dealing with the customers on an everyday basis. This video gives a fair idea about the justification of pricing and brings awareness to customers about the various commitments the professionals have when they do photography as a profession. When our customer understands our challenges, then the negotiations will be reasonable

Master Class in Salem

No boring background cloth or paper..! Everything was custom designed!!

KLR the photo guru’s ‘master class on advanced studio lighting’ was conducted by me at  Sri Prabhus’s Pradise Studio, Brindavan Road, Salem.

There were about 22 professional photographers from all over Tamil Nadu ready at 9.30am on 5^th January 2020. The creative portrait studio with multiple backgrounds created like a set on all sides including the walls, doors, windows and every single perspective was artistic and imaginative. The participants were surprised at the space and look of the studio and the rare creative props.

All the participants casually sat on the floor to understand the concept of the master class of KLR the photo guru. After explaining about the concept and the agenda for the day, I explained at-least 12 popular portrait lighting styles (Butterfly, Loop, Rembrandt, Split, Rim, Short, Broad, Double rim, Low key, High key, Top & Low light)

Soft boxes of various sizes, Octa box, strip light, beauty dish, grids, snoots, and other modifies for Elinchrom 400 lights were set ready for the shoot. The participants were briefed about the uses of all these modifies and made to choose them based on the beauty effects need for the shot. Though there were a lot of backgounds available in the studio, the appropriate BG was selected based on the dress and concept. We had an energetic female model Levi for the shoot. I explained the connection between the dress, background, pose and the choice of lighting.

We had Sony A7RIII camera with 24-70mm, 70-200mm,85mm lenses and the camera was connected to my laptop for tethering the shots. I demonstrated every shot and the participants tried their hand on and experimented the composition. Continuous reviews and feedbacks were given to all the participants. Every one got chances to shoot all the costumes. The details about the concepts and lighting were explained in the break between every costume change. The make-up was very professional and every one was involved in the shoot. It was about 7.00pm when we concluded the last dress – sari.

The master class was concluded after a question & answer session and the feedback from the participants. All the participants thanked me and Mr.Baabu (Prabhus’s Paradise Studio, Brindavan Road, Salem)

I drove back to Chennai with the satisfaction of imparting the knowledge of studio lighting to most deserved photographers…!.  I am ready to conduct my next master class…how about you participating..?
